Unemployment and a shortage of recreational outlets have contributed to one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Central America and an increase in drug use, gang membership and prostitution. By the time girls reach the age of 19, nearly half of them have been pregnant.

Because the majority of young people do not have access to basic health care and even fewer have access to sexual and reproductive health services, there has also been an increase in HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. This situation poses very serious problems for the youth of the country and implications for Nicaragua’s development.

To add to the problem, young people have been excluded from decision-making circles and have not been proportionally represented in political forums. In addition, funding for youth-oriented non-governmental organizations is inconsistent and spread thin.

Walter Coddington organized and directed the country’s first large-scale coalition formed to address the problems faced by youth. At the culmination of interviews, youth service project visits, brainstorming sessions and workshops, the Coalition designed and unanimously agreed upon a comprehensive initiative to improve the lives of the youth of Nicaragua. Furthermore, the Coalition members agreed that sustainable social and economic development of Nicaragua would depend on quality of life improvements for youth and their successful involvement in the political and economic activities of the country.
